Geometric Optimization Problems Over Sliding Windows

چکیده
We study the problem of maintaining a (1+2)-factor approximation of the diameter of a stream of points under the sliding window model. In one dimension, we give a simple algorithm that only needs to store O( 1 2 logR) points at any time, where the parameter R denotes the “spread” of the point set. This bound is optimal and improves Feigenbaum, Kannan, and Zhang’s recent solution by two logarithmic factors. We then extend our one-dimensional algorithm to higher constant dimensions and, at the same time, correct an error in the previous solution. In high nonconstant dimensions, we also observe a constant-factor approximation algorithm that requires sublinear space. Related optimization problems, such as the width, are also considered in the two-dimensional case.

Querying Sliding Windows Over Online Data Streams
A data stream is a real-time, continuous, ordered sequence of items generated by sources such as sensor networks, Internet traffic flow, credit card transaction logs, and on-line financial tickers. Processing continuous queries over data streams introduces a number of research problems, one of which concerns evaluating queries over sliding windows defined on the inputs. In this paper, we descri...
متن کاملStatic Optimization of Conjunctive Queries with Sliding Windows over Unbounded Streaming Information Sources
We study the problem of static optimization of conjunctive queries with sliding window joins over unbounded streaming information sources. While previous work has suggested focusing on maximizing the output rate of queries over streaming information sources, we show that in steady-state, for conjunctive queries with sliding windows over unbounded streams, all feasible plans have the same output...
متن کاملEffective Computations on Sliding Windows
In the streaming model, elements arrive sequentially and can be observed only once. Maintaining statistics and aggregates is an important and nontrivial task in this model. These tasks become even more challenging in the sliding windows model, where statistics must be maintained only over the most recent n elements. In their pioneering paper, Datar et al. [SIAM J. Comput., 31 (2002), pp. 1794–1...
متن کاملAN OPTIMAL FUZZY SLIDING MODE CONTROLLER DESIGN BASED ON PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION AND USING SCALAR SIGN FUNCTION
This paper addresses the problems caused by an inappropriate selection of sliding surface parameters in fuzzy sliding mode controllers via an optimization approach. In particular, the proposed method employs the parallel distributed compensator scheme to design the state feedback based control law. The controller gains are determined in offline mode via a linear quadratic regular. The particle ...
متن کاملQuerying Regular Languages over Sliding Windows
We study the space complexity of querying regular languages over data streams in the sliding window model. The algorithm has to answer at any point of time whether the content of the sliding window belongs to a fixed regular language. A trichotomy is shown: For every regular language the optimal space requirement is either in Θ(n), Θ(logn), or constant, where n is the size of the sliding window...
